SharePoint Saturdays Some Thoughts– A Follow Up

Paul Schaeflein wrote this yesterday: http://www.schaeflein.net/b... First off Paul is awesome so do not think of this blog post as an attack it is just my opinion. So first off I was there at the first SharePoint Saturday and I knew it was happening well before it happened. I have been an attendee, volunteer, speaker, and sponsor. I have thrown thousands of dollars and effort into these events. I am sold on the idea. Michael Lotter once told me that the whole point of ......

4 Years Ago this Weekend…

In January 0f 2009 something crazy and awesome happened for me, SharePoint Saturday was born. I was a 26 year old girl from Saint Louis Missouri who was living in Olathe, KS. About 5 month prior I went to the most pivotal event in my career and life in Washington DC, the Regional SharePoint Conference, where I met Michael Lotter, Paul Galvin, Tony Lanni, Bob Fox, and Rachel Appel. Several months later I was visiting Michael at a code camp in Raleigh North Carolina and he told me we’re going to have ......

2011 So Long and Thanks for All the Fish…

2011 started with a bang and ended with a boom for me. Anyway that’s not what I want to talk about in this blog post. I am not looking back I am walking forward. I was reckless with my life for several years and thought it was the best idea to act in a certain manner. I was reckless because I was neglectful of my happiness. I am changing that in 2012. I am instituting a travel policy where I will be traveling only once a month for an event or user group and no more than once a month. That means I ......

First off for those of you who attended some presentations the past few weeks here is the link for the code samples: https://skydrive.live.com/#... Here is the link for the slide decks: https://skydrive.live.com/#... Now I wanted to explain why the blogging has been very few and far between. As you guys know I went through some craziness in the past few months. I am just coming out of the tunnel and I can see ......

Reflections on Life

I haven’t written a blog post in a while. I understand there is blog neglect going on, but there is a lot going on in my life. I am trying really hard to embrace the change and roll with everything thrown my way. I had a really hard year it was not my best and it was not my worst. I cannot say it was entirely hard, because January 1st I received the MVP Award. If you know me you know the three things that happened starting in August, but if you really know me it was miserable for a substantial period ......

SharePoint Saturday–3 + Years Later

Click this link: http://sharepoint.microsoft... Notice at the bottom left-hand side of the page there is a SharePoint Saturday mention with the latest events. Now send a shout out to Susan Lennon, Michael Lotter, Eric Harlan, Dux Raymon Sy, Kris Wagner, Josh Carlisle, and every other person who put in some form of effort to the SharePoint Saturday brand. We all worked hard for 3 years or more organizing, volunteering, speaking, sponsoring, or spreading the word ......

1 Year Ago Today…

I suppose it’s one year and a bit of a day now, but anyway…One year ago today I started at Planet Technologies. I landed in Las Vegas on Monday, September 13th, 2010 and showed up to the Holiday Inn on Rainbow Blvd. They had two boxes for me, one cell and one laptop, it was kind of like being on a mission for some super secret organization. A day later I showed up to the client site and assessed the situation. I was not sure if this job was the job for me yet. I had good recommendations via email ......

Planning an Event–SPS NYC

I bet some of you were wondering why I am not going to any events for the most part in June and July (aside from volunteering at SPS Chicago). Well I basically have no life for the next 2 months. We are approaching the 11th hour of SharePoint Saturday New York City. The event is slated to have 350 to 400 attendees. This is second year in a row I’ve helped run it with Jason Gallicchio. It’s amazingly crazy how much effort this event requires versus Kansas City. It’s literally 2x the volume of attendees, ......

Recruiters: The Good, the Bad, and the Fugly?

I’ve had this conversation a ton of times with my SharePoint buddies what makes a good recruiter? I have blogged about absolutely abhorring recruiters in general. I don’t hate all recruiters. You can’t use the qualifier “All” for anything, like one of my math teacher’s Mrs. Wildermuth taught me in 10th grade. So which recruiters do I love and which ones do I absolutely never want to interact with again in my life? So here are ramblings on my thoughts to this subject. First off don’t start off asking ......

New York I Love You/I Hate You...

New York City was always this fantasy far away that I couldn't touch. I'm not sure it's really New York, but a place that was outside of St. Louis. A place that was outside this whole midwestern bubble I lived in when I was a kid. All I had was school and baseball, because well everything else wasn't so great when I until after I turned 18. When I was 18 I had this really great summer and it felt like everything was changing. It was the beginning of my life. I had no idea what that summer meant, ......

National Give Camp Weekend - January 14-16, 2011

What is a Give Camp? I get asked this question constantly in the SharePoint Community. About 3 years ago there was an event called "We Are Microsoft" in Dallas, TX. A lady named, Toi Wright, gathered up a bunch of charities and gathered up a bunch of IT Professionals in the community. They met for an entire weekend devising better ways to help these charities with 3 days projects. None of these charities had in house IT staff or they were lacking. The time these projects would save would help out ......

2011 The Year of Awesomesauce

So I was talking to one of my friends, Cathy Dew, and I’m wondering how to start out this post. What kind of title should I put? Somehow we’re just randomly throwing things out and this title pops into my head the one you see above. I woke up today to the buzz of a text message. I spent New Years laying around until 3 am watching Warehouse 13 Episodes and drinking champagne. It was one of the best New Year’s I spent with my boyfriend and my cat. I figured I would sleep in until Noon, but ended up ......

One National Team One Event – SharePoint Saturday Kansas City

I wasn’t expect to run an event from 1,000 miles away, but some stuff happened you know like it does and I opted in. It was really weird, because people asked why are you living in NJ and running Kansas City? I did move, but it was like my baby and Karthik didn’t have the ability to do it this year. I found it really challenging, because I could not physically be in Kansas City. At first I was freaking out and Lee Brandt, Brian Laird, and Chris Geier offered to help. Somehow I couldn’t come the day ......

Best Practices Conference, Women in SharePoint, and Live Blogging

I’ve been quiet lately for many reasons, such as SharePoint Saturday New York and heavy amounts of travel due to funerals and family events and life. So I think a lot of you have been wondering what is this Women in SharePoint thing? How does it fit into the community? Well, there are five of us, Kathryn Birstein, Cathy Dew, Lori Gowin, Karuana Gitamu, and myself. A year ago from this past June I wrote a blog post how I felt being a woman in SharePoint. It feels great to live in this era, because ......

MOSSLover Lives On…

A while back, maybe 6 months, I got some bad news about 2010. Microsoft was removing Office from the MOSS equivalent of 2010, so basically my alias would be obsolete the second 2010 caught on in the community. I thought about it for some time. I had some discussions with friends in the community. I even noticed that the MOSSMan changed his twitter id. I started my blog around a WSS 3.0 project when I worked for LRS in there St. Louis Office in February/March 2007. So I think it’s fitting to keep ......

New York Area Community Stuff

I’ve been running around trying to find my place in the community not quite situated yet. This past Monday I attended a community social event where all the community leaders in the area got together and discussed upcoming plans for the year. It was a lot of fun and surprisingly interesting. I thought there would be a lot more people in attendance of this event. I always assumed this area had so many more people. That I would be this tiny itty bitty fish in a very large pond. It didn’t really feel ......

Three Weeks…

So I did it. I moved, I ran a SharePoint Saturday, and I attended a wedding. I can’t say everything went smoothly in the process, but I will say it all worked out for the best. I started out my stressful adventure a couple months ago with packing and changing everything over to the new address. Here is my account as best as I can describe it to you guys… I woke up on Friday, December 11th at about 6 am after sleeping on the floor with my boyfriend. The mover’s came at about 7 am to pack the pod. ......

The Last UG Meeting…

I don’t think it’s fully hit me yet. This past Thursday was the last user group meeting of the year and the last meeting with me present as leader. Next week I am meeting with about 4 or 5 people to hand over the KC Office Geeks. Every so often I look back and reflect on where I have come in the past few years and how I got to this point in time. We have 177 people on the mailing list and an average from 15-20 people at each meeting. When Jeff handed off the group to me we were average 3 people per ......

Major Conference Cherry Popped…

So you are going to an event with 7,000 people that have similar interests to learn about a product that you have a vague idea about…I was excited prior to the event and nervous. I had a very bad week before the event. Every piece of technology that I brought with me to St. Louis broke. I had little sleep trying to get my code done and my technology to the point I started out with that Monday. Finally by Friday I was beat and hung out with my friends…On Saturday I went to Coders and everything after ......

SharePoint Saturday Kansas City 2010 Hands on Labs

I sort of underestimated the love of free hands on 2010 training. We have about 71 people signed up with about 50 or so people for the hands on lab sessions. I opened up the registration a couple of weeks ago. It's insane the kind of draw that we are receiving. In February I opened up registration with barely 20 people on the Click to Attend. The guys I worked with had to push to get out publicity. I called up all the local recruiters. With 3 months to spare we are at 71 out of 250. I am going to ......

SharePoint Saturday Kansas City Officially December 12th

In the mix of things we were the 2nd SharePoint Saturday event and I think we can do far better. I wanted to have a free conference with 2010 content that people didn’t have to pay for if they couldn’t afford SPC. So we are now finally confirmed for Saturday, December 12th at Johnson Country Community College Regnier Center. This event will be bigger (250 is the cap) and far better. Are you a developer? There are so many dev conferences out there, but I found out about this one a few months ago. I am speaking on SharePoint and Silverlight at devLink in Nashville. The conference lasts about 3 days from August 13th to the 15th in Nashville, TN (as Rob Foster says NashVegas). I am looking at the speakers from the .Net Community (and SharePoint) and some notable mentions would be Claudio Lassala, Jessica Moss, Steve Andrews, Clint Edmonson, Rob Foster, Eric Shupps, Jeremy Sublett, ......

What the SharePoint Community means to me…Maybe?

So I’ve blogged about this a lot. If you read my blog you know how I got started. Kansas City .Net User Group and walking up to the right person at the right time plus meeting the right people at the right events that just clicked as good people (Lee, Brian, Jeff, John, Tim, Michael). I guess looking back over the past 2 years (as of this month I believe?) in retrospect would be nice. Becky…Who is Becky?

My name is Becky Isserman. Everyone in the Kansas City Community knew me as Becky before they even knew who MOSSLover was on the web. I didn’t even buy the domain until last year in April after the first event I attended, STL MOSS Camp. It’s really weird how much I’ve done and how far I’ve come since then. A couple nights ago I got an email stating that I won some award. At first I saw the header and I was skeptical, because I had never really heard of the award. Two Weeks…No Bed…

All right so I exaggerated slightly with the title, but I literally did not see my bed for two weeks. A couple weeks ago was Passover, so I flew to Florida to visit my grandmother. Nothing exciting really, but Passover and fixing bugs. Then my grandmother, her husband, and I flew to Philadelphia to see my cousins. We had a pretty full house. I stayed for about a week and drove into the New Jersey B&R Office. I also spoke at the Philadelphia Office Geeks about Silverlight 2.0 and SharePoint. It ......

Why I Try and Help the Community...

So some of you have no idea who I am. I don't even know who I am sometimes. What self respecting 26 year old knows who they are. Anyway, I moved to Kansas City about a year and a half ago and I was depressed when I moved. I had just started to get involved with the St. Louis Jewish Community. I was going to go to start school again, but my job basically was we want to move you to Kansas City and we don't really have other options. I knew how it went. I was 24 years old. I had to move. Kansas City Day of Dot Net - Some Thoughts...

As most of you know my blog posts are a little random and more towards free writing. I just think and write. So today the Kansas City Day of Dot Net took place at Centriq. I was freaking out a little bit, because I wanted it to succeed so bad. I was afraid that being our first event here in the past ten year that no one would show up. From what I understand Lee Brandt was thinking the same thing. This event was solely born from his idea that we needed to plan more events in Kansas City. He did a ......

Stepping Back

I'm taking two steps back and one step forward. As some of you know I had a not so great last week due to taking on way too much in life. This past year has been my let's get active and out of the house year. It ended up becoming the "Becky Cannot Say No" year. I am one of those people who has a philosophy that involves giving yourself at least 1 hour to do something absolutely brainless per day. A couple people in the community have heard me complain a lot about my best friend's wedding. I was hoping I could get a get out of jail free card by not being in the wedding, but several months ago I got sucked in with everyone else. I have known Leah for about 8 years. Everyone is talking about Twitter and half the SharePoint Dev Community is using it (Lawrence Liu, Bil Simser, Alpesh Nakar, Matt Ranlett, etc...). I joined Twitter a long time ago and never really used it. I found it asinine and annoying at first, then a ton of devs joined. So I started to actually post and keep up with what was going. Tulsa School of Dev Rocked!!!

I had an incredible time in Tulsa. I was a little disappointed with the Doubletree Inn, so I'm sticking with Hampton Inn from now on. $20 for a burger and Ore Ida fries that I could make on my grill at home is insane.
