.NET corrupt???

I was installing SQL 2008 on my local box and ran into this issue.

I even tried this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/908077

But after several different approaches (rebuild .net from standalone install; remove all visual studio apps, etc.), I had to give up. The only explanation I have left is that this is a computer that was built from an image. And somehow those machines never work quite right for me.
