Gritwire is AWESOME

Gritwire rocks.  This is just top of the line presentation AND its very fast as well!  I just wonder how fast their release cycle is.  I'm currently a bloglines user and I'm tired of no responsiveness and the apparent lack of desire to add any new features (even though they have a great existing feature set, thats no reason not to improve).  Gritwire:  here is my feedback:

1.  I want the ability to mark a feed as read automatically after clicking on it (instead of having to click on "Mark as Read" every time).

2.  I want the option of a 2-pane "River of News" viewing style option.  Then maybe Dave Winer will blog about you too (but first you better add improved support for rss items with no title element, like Scripting News).  No wait, I don't want that because it might kill my performance if he brings you a lot more users.  River of News is sometimes more convenient, particularly for feeds in which you always want to see all the items (like photo feeds or really good feeds in which you usually want to read every item).

3.  For people who are just trying Gritwire out because they're interested in switching (like me), give them the ability to mark EVERYTHING as read.  Otherwise after I import my OPML from bloglines I have a ton of work to do in Gritwire!

4.  When reading, Just above the "Mark as read | Recommend | Unsubscribe" links you have the name of the feed I'm reading.  Make this a link to the htmlUrl so that I can easily visit the page in my browser if I like.

5.  Very impressed with the speed.

6.  Something is wrong with the linking support for relative urls.  In the IEBlog, this post:  http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/03/30/565222.aspx, contains a relative link for the text "Simple List Extensions in action".  When I click on this link in Gritwire it tries to take me to
instead of

7.  Love the podcast/vlog support.  Awesome.

8.  Add the option for you to show only feeds that actually have new items in the feed list.  No reason to show me the feeds I'm subscribed to if they don't have any new items waiting.

9.  When I subscribe to a new RSS feed, let me choose which folder to put it in instead of assuming the root folder.

Online Feed Readers Evaluated

I've been a Bloglines user for a while now, and before that FeedDemon.  FeedDemon is excellent, but I think I prefer the convenience of an online feed reader.  Bloglines is great, but I get the impression that nobody is actually working on improving it or supporting it.  I tried a switch to Newsgator Online, but apparently they have a brand new version in which the kinks aren't out yet.  I'll definitely give them another try because they seem to have promise.

I was happy to see this article on TechCrunch:  The State of Online FeedReaders.

You know what ANNOYS me about IE7?

  • When it finishes loading a page, it takes window focus from wherever I am!  Jeez, don't do that!  There's not much more annoying than when some application thinks that it should determine what window has focus and takes control away from me.
  • If it can't load a page after a certain time, it reissues the GET request.  Excuse me, but if I want to reload the page *I"ll* reload the page.  If the browser does it, it is really annoying if I'm debugging a web application.
  • Some pages still don't render correctly, such as the admin console of this weblog, which I cannot even navigate in IE7 at all.

Hey Lance Robinson, its me, Lance Robinson!

So that was the title of this email I got last night:  “Hey Lance Robinson, it is Lance Robinson! “.  What the?

Turns out a Canadian guy named Lance Robinson does a couple podcasts, does a vanity search in google for his name and “podcast” - and stumbles upon Lance Robinson.  Not him Lance Robinson...but me Lance Robinson.  Both of us involved in podcasting in some way.  I checked out his Hipbase.com Podcast.  Its a music podcast - great music, too.

Hey Lance, when are you going to let lancerobinson.com lapse so I can buy it away from you?  :)

Ray Ozzie raises javascript clipboard idea at Etech

Cut and paste “objects“ back and forth between websites and applications - like a date/time or appointment on a website with a calendar entry in Outlook.  Read more specifics on Ray Ozzie's blog.

San Diego

Arrived in San Diego yesterday for ETech06.  Here is Eric watching the sea lions at the beach in La Jolla.  Last night went to the keynote, grabbed a drink, and got some much needed sleep!  We're off bright and early this morning to hear Ray Ozzie speak.
