WM5.0 Emulator Networking

Using networking in the device emulators in VS2005 is not as nice as it should be.

The first time you try to use the network in the emulator you'll probably get this error:  "Failed to open the VPC Network Driver. Verify that the driver is installed, or install the driver from the Web download location at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=46859".

Or if the first time you try to use the network is with the IP*Works! .Net CF Edition components, you'll get an even uglier error saying:  "A socket operation encountered a dead network".

For whatever reason, networking doesn't just work.  In my experience, you must first start ActiveSync 4, then run the Emulator Device Manager from the VS2005 Tools menu, start the emulator you'd like to use, and then right click that emulator in the Emulator Device Manager and choose "cradle".  Then your emulator will connect through ActiveSync just as if it were a real device.

It seems to me that all of this should be handled automatically in the emulator and be invisible to the developer, but once you get through this part no problem.  Its worth this hassle to be able to use he WM5.0 emulator.  If this doesn't help, try this blog post from the Visual Studio for Devices blog.

Back Home

I'm back home from DevConnections and Las Vegas (luckily my wallet only weighs a little bit less than it did when I showed up in Vegas).  Two other guys took over the /n software booth - if you are there, drop by and say "hi" and sign up to win an iPod Nano.  The conference was packed, lots of people and some great speakers.

DevConnections Blog

If you're at DevConnections and you haven't already, check out Paul Litwin's DevConnections Blog.  Besides his own comments, he's also got links to a lot of other people who are blogging the conference from Vegas.

DevConnections Dessert

Tonight was the keynote (Scott Guthrie) at DevConnections, followed by the dessert reception in the expo hall.  Cakes of all types...mmmmm, yummy.  Nothing like cake and beer together!  When the expo hall doors opened a massive swarm of developers came marching towards the exhibition booths looking for stamps (to qualify for the Harley giveaway) and all the pamphlets, cd's, and toys they could hold in one hand while eating cake with the other.

There were a lot of fellow North Carolinians there, and a lot of people came up and told me that they are already using IP*Works! for internet sockets.  A lot of people were interested in the credit card components and the EDI toolkit, as well as the EDI AS2 Connector.

After all this goodness, on to the blackjack table it was for me!  Unfortunately I went back to the room with lighter pockets.  :)

Bloglines and Enclosures

Its old news that Bloglines had some obvious changes recently (ie, the hotkeys), but I did not realize that one of these changes was enclosure recognition.  I tell you one thing, for an RSS aggregation software company, bloglines sure does have trouble communicating with its users.  For some strange reason, their news page *looks* like it might be based on a feed, but it has no permalinks.  Do they even have a blog?

DevConnections

I'll be at the DevConnections show coming up in Vegas as an exhibitor (look for me at the nsoftware booth!).  This will also be my first time in Vegas and I'll have some extra time before the show to play in the casinos, but hopefully I can make it out of there without losing my shirt (otherwise people might look at me funny in the expo hall!).  This trip should be a lot of fun!  See you there!
