whatsmyip.net is now using Google Maps

Whatsmyip.net uses Google maps to attempt to pinpoint the location of your IP address. Pretty neat!

Other reasons for HTTP component requests being rejected

Besides servers sometimes rejecting HTTP requests because of the user-agent header, there are other reasons that servers will (sometimes mistakenly) reject requests or provide unexpected responses.

Amoung these:

  • Accept header (the content-types allowed by the requesting client)
  • Accept-Encoding header (the content-encoding allowed by the requesting client, this is where you would specify deflate or gzip http compression)
  • HTTP version (IPWorks default is HTTP 1.1, but this can be set to 1.0 if necessary)
  • User-Agent (some services will only allow particular useragents, such as IE. This is a very bad practice.)

Rejecting HTTP requests based on User-Agent header

Lots of sites are rejecting HTTP requests from IE7 because they don't recognize the User-Agent header it sends.

nsoftware recently ran into this problem with the IP*Works! HTTP component. Google has started rejecting requests in which the User-Agent contains an asterisk character! What in the world is that about, Google? We had to change the User-Agent header default value (it is of course configurable by the developer using the component), which is no big deal and is a quick-fix, but this is a change that we should not have had to make.

Brad Sucks

The "one man band with no fans", Brad Sucks, sure has a lot of fans. While he's been pointed to by a lot of bloggers for a long time, apparently he got pounded this week by a link from Boing Boing. Check out his music via free download (he provides a bittorrent link on his site). Buy his CD if you like his music, I did!

My Google Blog Search Results

Lots of people have been comparing the new Google Blog Search with others like Technorati, PubSub, and Bloglines. Until the last few days, I've been using Bloglines and Bloglines Citations to keep track of blogs talking about or linking to my own blog or my company's RSS feed. Now I'm finding that Google is doing a better job.

For example, a search on Bloglines of all blogs for "IP*Works!" gives me two results (really one, since both of their results are the same blog post!)

A search on Google Blog Search gives me 18 results on the same "ipworks" criteria. Although some of them appear to be "spam feeds", thats ok, because most of them are not. Hopefully Google will find a way to get rid of the results from spam feeds.

Amnesia at ITConversations

Hey Doug and Halley, how about a few more trips down memory lane? I think I must have been spoiled last fall when there were frequent episodes, and now I am left wanting. Is the slow down a matter of time availability or lack of popularity in teh series? I hope not the latter.

I have been enjoying one of the newer additions - Larry's World has been filling the gap for me, I definitely like this style of interview (but Halley's voice is much more enjoyable to hear :D).

Still listening in PPR and in my car everyday. Thanks for all your hard work.

"Major power disruptions" reported in LA

CNN is reporting "major power disruptions" in LA. A technorati search shows a handful of posts from the last 30 minutes or so. Apparently around 1 oclock pacific a large portion of LA power was blacked out. No explantion so far. I wonder if it is effecting PDC?

Update:  CNN reports:

“An official with the city Department of Water and Power said it appeared the problem began when two power receiving stations failed. That forced several larger generating stations to shut down, according to Robert Rozanski, chief administrative officer.”
