Jeff Scranton .Net and other programming blather...

Poor little geeks...they stayed up all night long, stood in line and froze their little bits off hoping that they might actually get the latest and greatest gaming console called the XBox 360 when Best Buy opened at Midnight. There is nothing worse than the look of gut-wrenching agony on the face of a geek when he/she realizes that the 60 or so units they hoped to get one of were gone by 12:00:30 AM..

So, on their way home the mass of geeks found themselves sitting empty handed in their local Kripy Kreme doughnut shop trying to “find a way.“ The answer: EBay....Yeah baby! Ebay to the rescue...oh but hold your enthusiasm there Tinkerbell, the XBox 360 is selling for a lot more than $400.00 on EBay...but you rationalize your lust for this machine by convincing yourself that $900.00 isn't THAT much of a mark-up and by golly, you GOTTA have one.

Here's some advice from someone that has healed himself of the “GOTTA HAVE IT NOW” syndrome:

If you have ~$1,000.00 that is absolutely burning a hole through your sole, visit www.monarchcomputer.com  and have them put something together for you that will knock your socks off. If you like to build your own systems, you could spend some time on www.newegg.com or www.tigerdirect.com or www.svcompucycle.com and get everything you need to build a Athlon 64-based system.

But, if you must have an XBox 360 I understand but keep this in mind as you swoon over your “precious”: NEVER buy version 1.0 of anything. Perhaps that's the hardest part isn't it? The waiting for Revision 1 to be shipped. Fear not though, 6 months from now there will be a glut of XBox 360's on the market and it WILL hit you all of the sudden: that the $900.00 you spent on your XBox 360 was, in fact, a LOT of money.

Patience IS a virtue.

Pre-Order, Pre-Order, Pre-Order. I can't believe how many people didn't put down the $50 bucks back in Summer so that they wouldn't have to go through the "pain" of not getting one on release day.

I was the 3rd in at my Best Buy, I showed up only 15 minutes before store opening, and was let in before all teh line up people.

I think this time they got it right as far as revision-1 goes. Knock on wood.

But if you wait for the second revision, you may lose your chance at hacking the Xbox360. The hack developers are currently hacking a way at Xbox360 v1.0. Microsoft isn't going to release Xbox360 v1.1 until there's an exploitable hole that needs to be patched. Buy a Xbox360 v1.1, and you won't be able to hack in until the hack teams uncover a new exploit.
