Cool BizTalk Blogs

Just installed BizTalk on my Vista notebook. Here are some information that may help:

My BizTalk’s edition – BizTalk Server 2006 R2 (Developer edition)

Operating System – Windows Vista Ultimate

The installation process is as seamless as it was for previous editions of BizTalk Server 2006. Only important point to remember is you download the prerequisite cab file for Vista. You may be in habit of using previously downloaded prerequisite cab file. Setup will automatically download the CAB file (BtsRedistVistaEN32.cab) if you are connected to internet.

After installation of BTS R2, the configuration UI appeared. I selected “Basic Configuration”, provided credentials, SQL Server location and clicked “Configure” button. All possible components were configured successfully. After configuration, I tested BTS with few samples and it works fine!

BizTalk Server 2006 R2 prerequisite for Vista can be downloaded manually from:

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=81432

System requirement for BizTalk Server R2 is documented at following page but I don’t know why information for Vista has been ignored. I don’t see Vista in the list of supported operating system.

http://www.microsoft.com/biztalk/en/us/system-requirements.aspx

However, BizTalk R2 works absolutely fine on Vista. I could also find another document published by Microsoft for installation and configuration guide on Windows Vista.

You can download the installation and configuration guide of BizTalk Server R2 for respective operating systems from:

https://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=DF2E8A88-FB23-49A4-9AC7-D17F72517D12&displaylang=en

I've never tried BT on Vista, but at some point a client will probably ask me about it. Thanks letting everyone know that it can work. Do let us know if you run into any issues in the future.

Absolutely...
BTS has worked perfect in whatever I tried so far!

So far, I have worked with Orchestrations, BRE, Administration Console and it works fine.

Even the "BizTalk Web Services Publishing Wizard" worked perfect. It successfully generate code, created WS on IIS 7. It worked well as it would on IIS 6. You only need to get acquainted with new looks and features of IIS 7.

One area that may not work properly are artifacts/components that are dependent on SharePoint. I do not see any SharePoint edition that can be installed on Vista. Neither I could find any document that talks about "installing SharePoint on Vista". I still have to some investigation in this area.

Jay we have installed BTS2006R2 on Vista and are able to deploy BTS projects, but are unable to get the BizTalk Web Services Publishing Wizard to work. It generates the following error on the WCF Service Location dialog:
----
(Microsoft.BizTalk.Adapter.Wcf.Publishing.WebDirectory.WebDirectoryException) World Wide Web service (W3SVC) on host "localhost" not available.

The following Windows component may not be installed: Application Server -> Internet Information Services (IIS) -> Common Files.

Unknown error (0x80005000)

(System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException) Unknown error (0x80005000)
----
We followed the WCF on IIS7 guide here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms752252.aspx but still no luck.

Were you able to get the Publishing Wizard working right out the box to IIS7?

Yes, I am able to work with the "Web Service Publishing Wizard" and it works fine. I have not come across the problem you have mentioned.

However, here is what you could do (if not already):

At IIS 7 enable "IIS 6.0 Compatibility":

Steps:
1. Open Control Panel
2. Double-click Programs and Features
3. Expand Internet Information Services
4. Expand Web Management Tools
6. Check IIS 6 Management Compatibility

Thanks Jay, the problem was that I missed checking the IIS WMI Compatabilty box in the II6 Management Capability section. For other who may read this, in the II6 Management Capability you need to enable: Mgt Console, WMI, and Metabase. In the MS .NET 3.0 section the WCF HTTP Activation and XPS Viewer should be checked. These are all explained in the Biztalk Install Guide for Vista at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=128383.
