Error: Your search cannot be completed because this site is not assigned to an indexer. Contact your administrator for more information.

My Resolution:

  1. Open SharePoint Central Administrator
  2. Go to "Application Management" tab
  3. Click on "Content Databases"
  4. Click on the database name. Default name would be "WSS_Content".
  5. Select "Select Windows SharePoint Services search server" from the drop down.

You don't need to configure this manually if you installed Windows Sharepoint Services 3.0 in standalone mode.

Sachin,

I have mentioned the steps that worked for me. I cannot comment further on your error unless I know your system/configuration. There could be multiple factors that I am not aware of.

I noticed that many people have blogged on this error and Microsoft site also has some info. Below search result may help you:

Humm... What if there is nothing in the dropdown? It's even gray/disabled. Do you have a hint?

this is a life saver

The search database was marked as suspect. Knowing that it could easliy be rebuilt, I removed it and created a new one but came up with is error. After much searching I found your note and it was fixed in 30 sec. Thanks muchly.

Unfortunately I am experiencing the same error but the "Select Windows SharePoint Services search server" box is greyed out, so I cannot select anything. I am using a SharePoint 3.0 standalone installation with SQL Express (I guess) as backend and Server 2008 R2 OS. Hints would be very welcome!
