We’ve all seen the posts around Windows 7 and how the installation goes, so to join in I thought I’d might share my experience with this new OS.

So first things first. Since I didn’t have a separate pc available I started up Virtual PC and created a new virtual pc. No special settings were used, but just to inform you I used 2GB of RAM. After that, started up the PC, captured the iso file and off we went.

First thing that comes up is just some basic info about keyboard layout:

Installation_1

Nothing more required, installation went off as expected:

Installation_2

Installation_3

And after about 35 minutes after the start of the installation (some restarts are required, no big shockers there), I felt slightly proud to see this little screen:

TestRun_1

NOW! First impression?

Well, I instantly felt sorry for the fact that VPC, after not supporting Vista Aero, ALSO doesn’t support the new taskbar previews. Big shame, because I was looking forward to that feature. However, without this nifty little thing, I do feel pretty comfortable with the grouping system of the taskbar. It takes some getting used to, but ah well, that’s the case for every new toy!

Another thing that takes some thought is the fact that the “show desktop” button is located far right from the taskbar, next to the clock, visualised as a translucent rectangle. No icon used, just a tooltip. If you don’t know this, it takes a while to search for it :)

Next thing I noticed was that the sidebar disappeared. No more black rectangle on the screen if it’s docked, or a color transfer if it’s not docked. The gadgets simply dock themselves to the screen. It instantly got clear that this is still a beta version, because the gadgets do NOT move away when another gadget is hovered over, which made the vista sidebar a little better.

So that’s about it for the little testing time I had. More tests will be done when I get the chance. Hope you enjoyed reading :)
