I went out today and picked up a copy of Symantec's Norton Internet Security 2006.  I have always been a fan of Norton products, as they are simple to you, and work rather well.  I figured I would try this since I couldn't find much information about it on the internet at all.  I went ahead and tried installing it on a VPC with Additions, and Win XP SP2, and I have a P4 3.0 w/HT CPU.  Needless to say, I tried increasing the Page file, I dedicated 1024 MB of RAM to the VPC, but I still could not get it to function properly.  It started that the installation was so slow.  It took nearly two hours to install the program.  Once it installed, and rebooted, I never got to the Activation section.  It kept locking up and blowing my CPU out at 100%.  I finally decided to can it, and uninstall it which also took forever.  I then installed it on my host PC, whcih worked just fine.  As a host app, it works great and has an attractive layout.  Nice product actually, but just dont try to install it in VPC.  If anyone gets it to run well in a VPC let me know... I would like to know what you did.  I still have yet to try it in VMware... do that later as well as give a review on the features from my host PC... I am going to bed now.

Hey,

I've just recently installed NIS 2006 myself on my home PC, and had a few problems with limited users accounts.

Basically it all runs fine when logged in as an Administrator account, but if I try and use a limited user account it all breaks with several errors.

Just wondering if you've seen anything like this yourself?

I'm currently in contact with Symantec about the problem, but no joy so far.

# re: Norton Internet Security 2006 1/23/2006 8:43 PM Joyce
I am having MAJOR problems with NIS 2006. It won't let me automatically protect myself against threats. I click the " fix me" icon, and it appears to be fixing the problem, but it never does. This is the first time I have ever had problems with Norton and I am beginning to wonder if I should have switched to something else. I hate feeling like I wasted $50...but I am getting extremely frustrated that I can't even talk with tech support. If you call the company, you will be charged...so what am I supposed to do? any advice for me?

# re: Norton Internet Security 2006 1/24/2006 12:31 PM Calvin
Joyce, give their online web chat a go. I was quite surprised by the level of support that they were able to provide through that, and it's free.

Unfortunately, I got so frustrated with my problem that in the end I just reformatted the PC and started again. As expected, everything has worked fine since. It's certainly not the ideal situation for everyone, but in my case it's something that probably should have been done anyway.

I have installed NIS2006 and have a activation key , but when I'm going to acticate, the program are communicating with the server and waiting for activation verification until it ends and respond with message : the service are not active

# re: Norton Internet Security 2006 2/9/2006 6:14 PM Evan Winslow
Make sure your internet connection is connected, and that you can access a web page. If not, then email me and we can work with that. If so, then try it again. It would be easier if I could see a screen shot of it. You are saying that it comes up with a message saying "The service is not active."? Is this an error message from the PC, or is it an error within the Norton program console? Also, is there any option of activating by phone, in the event that your computer is not properly corresponding with the symantec server? Email me with your system information and I will see what I can do to help you.

# re: Norton Internet Security 2006 2/9/2006 6:19 PM Evan Winslow
@ Joyce,
Is this a new problem or has this been ever since you purchased the program (or did you just purchase it)? Were there any other Symantec/Norton programs loaded on your computer when you installed NIS2006? If so you are going to need to uninstall every Symantec/Norton program and start with a clean slate (from the point of view of Symantec / Norton programs ... i am not suggesting a reformat). Email me if you are still having problems. NIS 2006 has caused many problems for users of older versions with upgrading and what not. I do apologize for the delay in my response as I have been overly busy with school. If you email me you have more of a chance of me getting to it sooner. onestoppcshopwebresponse@comcast.net

# re: Norton Internet Security 2006 2/26/2006 12:37 AM James
same happened to me...shortly after running and installing Norton's updates....still haven't found a solution!

# About NIS 2006 activation problem 2/26/2006 7:36 AM JCD
Symantec launched something like a update for the bug that allowed activation using 00000....000999 key....So the way around this problem is: Reformat your PC, (reinstall windows), install NIS 2006 and when it promts for live update, do not update The Norton Internet Security Program updates (the 188KB and 45KB).....Or wait for a proper KeyGen...

# re: Norton Internet Security 2006 2/26/2006 1:51 PM James
you don't need to reinstall Windows..
Uninstall NIS
Uninstall Live Update
Delete C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security (if there)
Delete C:\Program Files\Symantec (if there)
Delete C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared
Start>Run and type %temp% and delete everything (unless it's being used)
Search for myprofile.userprofile and delete it (hidden/system file that keeps your subscription logged even after uninstalling)
Delete HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Symantec
Delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Symantec
Reboot

Install NIS and use jgg84 8ym4w kppcr qxrjj xbffk.
Reboot

Disable internet connection and try to activate. After it fails it will give you 2 options.
Pick the phone one. In the space put all 0's except the last 3 should be 365 and click next.
After it's activated, close out of that window and wait for the main NIS window to come up.
Close out of Live Update if it comes up.

######## Go to control panel / symantec live update General tab. switch to express mode #######

open NIS main window and hit live update.

I think everybody should find out what the best concurrent to Norton is, turn his back to norton forever... and dont forget to buy some stocks from norton...

# re: Norton Internet Security 2006 2/27/2006 4:36 PM Evan Winslow
I concur with JCD. Symantec released an update that fixed the hole to use the 999 phone activation. As has been said, you will have to wait for a keygen, find a working copy because there are still a few working copies floating around on the torrent sites, or go and purchase a legitimate copy (pirated software is bad... cough... cough...)

# re: Norton Internet Security 2006 2/27/2006 4:41 PM Evan Winslow
@all in regards to James' comments:

it is easier to uninstall any symantec software installed on your computer, including liveupdate, then download and run symnrt and the registry fix from symantec.com. Then delete any norton or symantec folder from %system root%\Program Files. Empty the Recycle Bin, and then restart the workstation. Reinstall Norton products using whatever method you choose.

# re: Norton Internet Security 2006 2/27/2006 8:16 PM James
you can download all Norton updates after re-install as the one that caused the problem with the activation's been removed...seems it caused problems with the legit copies too!

Hi, I installed NIS 2006 in two computers.

After March 5th, one stop to work asking for reactivation, the other still fine.

Both were installed exactly in same way. Both are updated. Do you have any idea why one is working and the other doesn't.

# re: Norton Internet Security 2006 3/20/2006 6:34 PM Mike
can someone tell me an activation code, i lost mine and i dont want to re purchase the software

# re: Norton Internet Security 2006 3/21/2006 4:30 PM Rietha
I bought my NIS2006 and tried installing it on my brand new PC. But I could not succeed in connecting to the internet when prompted to do so, and afterwards I cannot see the program, except on the "Add or Remove" of the Control Panel. Also because it kept on rejecting my Product Key as "incorrect", I uninstalled it, and tried again installing it, and tried again, and again, and again and.....again, and still never see it on my PC except on the "Add or Remove". It does not install "properly" like the first time (it only "swoochchch" for a few seconds and then disappears from the screen), and does not activate by prompting for the Product Key again. And no other "ActiveX1" or ActiveX Control" helps. I think I must return this copy, claim my money and buy some total other product. I lost two nights' sleep because of this intolerable product.

I bought NIS 2006. Whenever I click on NIS it says that I have to wait because it "performs initial configuration" and that for a full week. I do not get any serious replies from Symantec. My money is gone and I am mad and frustrated

# re: Norton Internet Security 2006 4/9/2006 9:57 AM justme
I have used Norton NIS for years. I renewed and upgraded to NIS 2006 about one month ago and have had problems ever since! The only way I can get my system to work is to disable the NIS! With it enabled I can't log on at all...
get messages that the server can't be found, etc.
It is very frustrating!

I am ready to uninstall the NIS since I am getting nowhere with solutions.
I use MSN for an ISP. I notice on their homepage that MSN is offering antivirus and firewalls for their customers. I assume these would be more compatible for my system.

man, after reading about this i googled other comments / reviews. cnet.com had a huge thumbs down sentiment on user rating (3.9 out of 10) for this product, legal or corner cutting, regardless. even if i have a way around it, don't think i want it. what's the use if so many ppl think it's crap

i followed the instructions that James posted on 2/26/2006, and those worked, although i first ran the program that Evan Winslow recommended. this program uninstalled the norton products, but it did not delete the registry keys and the directories that James specified, so i had to delete them manually. now, i just reinstalled NIS 2006 and it looks like its working again, it allowed me to choose the phone activation and now i have about 2500 or something days of updates remaning, thanks guys! you rock :D

I have a keygen, but apparently it isn't working for me, I'm trying James's instructions. Here is a download link I just created for the keygen. Hope it can help someone.

James' instructions didnt work for me... expired again..

# re: Norton Internet Security 2006 4/12/2006 1:49 PM Jimbo
Ive even tried JCD's suggestion above James' instructions not to download the Norton Internet Security Program Updates update on Live update but still the activation goes off. There is definately an update thats been issued recently to knock it off - Im on it and will let you know which one it is as soon as I figure it out...

Sussed it. Do NOT install the "Norton Internet Security Resource Updates" update - size 820.3KB. This is the one thats knocking off my activation.. Tested it twice. So heres what I did. Uninstalled, rebooted, went into regedit, removed the 2 reg keys (H Key Local Machine/Software/Symantec and HKEY Current User/Software/Symantec (If you dont do this, when you come to the activate by phone stage again it will tell you the 000999 code is invalid), removed all folders called Symantec from Hard Drive (makin sure I was searching for system & hidden files as well), reinstalled product whilst disconnected from internet, rebooted and activated product in normal way with the 000999 option, cancelled LiveUpdate when it came up then opened NIS and disabled LiveUpdate - then reconnected internet, went back to LiveUpdate (in interactive mode) and downloaded ALL available updates. Rebooted and then went to LiveUpdate again and this time the offending update I have put above was there (it isnt in the list when you do your FIRST LiveUpdate). DONT download it if you want your subscription to remain valid. Hope this helps everyone. I seem to recall that when it first went back in Feb, I found that you had to take Automatic LiveUpdate off and use it manually instead to avoid the downloading of this offending update. Looks like Norton clocked this and so yesterday (12th April) put this update also into the manual LiveUpdate. UP YOURS NORTON!!!!

# re: Norton Internet Security 2006 4/13/2006 1:31 PM eagle4ever
i'm returning to Norton Antivirus 2005 plus Outpost Pro 3.5. This duet works more stable than NIS 2006 and is not so dramatically hard for my PC's performance. NIS 2006 is able to slow down my Athlon64 3200+ 1Gb RAM DDR400 dual ch. mode. I liked Norton very much but now it is really bad solution. What do they hope for?

# re: Norton Internet Security 2006 4/13/2006 3:23 PM fighter
jimbo , your method worked man , thank you , so now we know one update that causes this activation problem , i think that norton will send more of these stupid updates but with diffrent names , hope you'll find them out before we download them , thanks again

# re: Norton Internet Security 2006 4/13/2006 6:49 PM lrz
Hey Jimbo, I have applied your method. Thank you very much for your research. Very helpful, indeed!

For all who applied Jimbo's procedure, have the latest update as of 4/13, and might have problems with further updates from Sym, pls let us know (cuz it seems this is the only page that contains this critically helpful information).

So, no AutoLU? if anyone finds any KG/CR, pls let us know all also. Will be visiting often.

Thank you all!!

I used Jimbo's method. I uninstalled Norton Internet security 2006, cleaned the hard drive, cleaned the reg. Reinstalled, got 867 days or so, then did 1 (one) Live update, (in interactive mode). As Jimbo stated the "Norton Internet Security Resource Updates" wasn t there. Restarted windows, ... and didn t worked, Norton was deactivated. Apparently at the first Live update, "Norton Internet Security Resource Updates" was downloaded automaticaly and it was nt possible to de select it (I ve been carfull to look for it) ...

# re: Norton Internet Security 2006 4/14/2006 10:28 AM Jimbo
Did you turn off Automatic LiveUpdate before connecting back onto the Internet? I bet you didnt..

# re: Norton Internet Security 2006 4/15/2006 3:28 AM Kerberos
mmmh... actually you might be right, I maybe have missed that. I ll try again then :-) . Thx anyway.

Hello...
Is there a new crack for this somewhere out there ????

# re: Norton Internet Security 2006 4/15/2006 2:35 PM abi
Hi. I just followed the steps described by Jimbo. I checked LiveUpdate did not include the "Norton Internet Security Resource Updates" update. It worked fine for few hours then NIS asked for activation again. I used the "0000 ...000999" key (after disconnecting from internet) but NIS turned off and is no longer working. Not sure whether the Norton changed the name of that "Norton Internet Security Resource Updates" update? any idea of how to fix this. I think I need to run LiveUpdate from time to time . If Norton has instalted an application that switch off the activation in that update mentioned by Jimbo they can put it in any other update (just change the name...). Thanks for help.

Hi I have joined you all with this problem
I E. Norton Internet Security 2006.
Mine installed with no problems until I went
to updates. I am now wondering if it is worth
having it sorted out by a computer firm or ditching it. Im only a user not a Technician.
Is it worth spending more money on?
Clive.

Where are the guys from SSG? They did a real good job of making a keygen for NIS2005 and it came out fast.

# re: Norton Internet Security 2006 4/16/2006 2:53 AM Richie
I just cut my losses and changed! It could go on for ages. Symantec could put the deactivation code in ANY of the updates and keep swapping it so you would never know which one not to download. I cant see a keygen is the ultimate answer to this one.

# re: Norton Internet Security 2006 4/16/2006 12:22 PM Jimbo
It really is quite simple. Do not download the Norton Internet Security Resource Updates update. And make sure Automatic LiveUpdate is PERMANENTLY off - if it isnt permanently off, of course it will download this update that knocks out the subscription the very next time you are online!!! Every time you go to update via LiveUpdate manually, download all other available updates and just untick the resource one - quite simple really.... Mine is still working fine as I have Automatic LiveUpdate OFF and just manually run LiveUpdate from time to time downloading all updates apart from the resources one... Yes they could put it in any other update in the future and call it something else but as yet they havent...

# re: Norton Internet Security 2006 4/16/2006 5:12 PM Mojojojo
How do you turn off Update?

# re: Norton Internet Security 2006 4/16/2006 11:53 PM Hiboux
Thank's Jimbo! It works!

# re: Norton Internet Security 2006 4/17/2006 5:19 AM Jimbo
To turn off Automatic LiveUpdate, open up your main NIS 2006 screen - go to the Options button at the top, down to the Norton AntiVirus option, then click on the left where it says LiveUpdate - and then untick the option where it says Turn Automatic LiveUpdate on (recommended). Click ok and you will get a drop down box asking how long you want to turn it off for - choose permanently then get back online...

I have NSW and NIS as well and I have reinstalled them both and only manually updated the virus definitions from symantecs website, I have a list of the possible updates that I can receive

Symantec Trusted Application List
-List verification update (95.7 kb)
-List verification update (95.7 kb)
-Symantec trusted application list update (2577.1 kb)
Symantec Security Software Update
-Common Client ccProxy (250.6 kb)
-Program updates to Symantec redirector (1551.8 kb)
-Symantec Common Client (687.5 kb)
-Symantec Common Driver: SymEvent (193.0 kb)
Symantec Intrusion Prevention Signatures
-Intrusion Detection Signature Update (2 updates 148.4 kb)
Norton Protection Center

-Norton Internet Security 2006 update (188.4 kb)
Norton Antivirus
-Norton Program Update(english) (1497.9 kb)

Are there any additional updates I should turn off since I have NSW 2006 installed as well or will the directions work for both NIS and NSW installed at the same time

# re: Norton Internet Security 2006 4/17/2006 1:01 PM Jimbo
Download ALL of the above with no worries. Then when youve done that, go back to LiveUpdate and check again for updates. This time you will see only 2 or 3 (cant remember exactly) - and some that are not in the first big list you get when you reinstall the product. I imagine that the 2nd bunch of updates are dependant on the first lot being downloaded. In the 2nd manual liveupdate that you do, one of the few updates remaining will be the Resource updates update. I'll tell you what - spend 24 hours downloading every single update above one by one like I did (twice to be sure to be sure) and tell me its not the Resource update thats knocking off dodgy/cracked/copied installations.... How many times...

# re: Norton Internet Security 2006 4/17/2006 1:20 PM kookoo
alright, thanks, for NSW there is a similar file size and name to that of the NIS resource update so I'm going to assume to not download that one either until someone can confirm that

ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/linked_files/tsgen/SymNRT.exe

http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/download/pages/SP-N95.html

Att. TiTonix

how do u guys do LiveUpdate manually ?
i went to Control Panel > Symantec LiveUpdate > General > Express mode selected > OK
then i ran LiveUpdate, and it downloaded and installed bunch of the updates WITHOUT letting me choose them 1 by 1.

@Jimbo, plz help!
I had my NSW installed along with NIS. Followed ur instructions and both worked well. Unfortunately, after taking an update named Norton System Works and it shut my NSW down. How can I uninstall just only NSW but not affecting NIS? If there is no solution, I'm gonna uninstall both.

# re: Norton Internet Security 2006 5/5/2006 11:43 AM kookoo
This is a fix so you can leave Live Update on
If you have NIS or NSW installed, uninstall them using this method:
Use Nortons removal tool then,
Go to Start --> Control Panel --> Add/Remove Programs.
Scroll down to your Norton program
Click Change --> Remove All.
You will be asked to restart your PC. Do so.
Now go to Start --> My Computer --> Program Files. Right click on each Symantec folder and select Delete.
While you are in Program Files go to the Common Files folder at or near the top of the Program Files window. Delete every Symantec folder there. And, again, restart your PC.
Go to Start --> Search --> All Files and Folders --> More Advanced Options. Check each option except for "Case sensitive"
Now type in Norton and delete each Norton folder from the search results (Again, right click, choose "Delete"). One more time, restart your PC.
Repeat step 5 except type Symantec in the "Search" box.
The next step is trickier: go into the Registry.

First thing to do is Back up the Registry. I'll be saying more about the Registry later. But suffice it to say that the presence of uninstalled security software in the Registry can conflict with newly installed security software and cause system freezes. So can folders of "uninstalled" programs for that matter.
Once again, go to Start, then click on "Run". Type in "regedit"
Go to the top of the Regedit window. Click (+) next to HKEY_CURRENT_USER. Go down the thread until you see Software. Click on Software and scroll down the thread until you see Symantec. Right click on Symantec and choose "Delete".
From there go down to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and repeat step 3. Restart your PC.
Click (+) next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, now: Click (+) next to Software, Click (+) next to Microsoft, Click (+) next to Windows and Click (+) next to CurrentVersion.
Select the Run folder. Right-click and delete each Symantec entry you see (if present). Restart your PC.
That should completely eradicate Norton from your system!
Once you have done this
1- Install NIS and restart your computer...
2- Disable the NIC (I mean ethernet card, or disconnect from Internet...)
3- Do the 00000....00999 stuff,
4- LiveUpdate until it needs restart, do it...
5- When it says Activation is Expired, restart in safe mode
6- Find ISSTE.dll file in your install path ( Ex. C:\ProgramFiles\Norton Internet Security\ISSTE.dll ) and rename -like ISSTE.dll_ - or delete it.
7- Copy ISSTE.dll file from your Install CD where you already renamed the file (This file is located under CDROM DRIVE: WINNT\SETUP\APP\ISSTE.dll)
8- Change the attribute to Archieve, Read Only and Hidden (Right click on the file that you've already copied and click the Attributes boxs' that I've mentioned)
9- Restart the computer again
10- When it says Fix the Issue, click to fix it
11- Do the same process that you've done very first time (Enter the install serial number, and than 0000000......00999 for the phone activation code) and go to the end...
12- Enable your NIC (Ethernet card, or Connect to the Internet)
13- LiveUpdate for updates....
Then if you want to install NSW
The same registration process (You can find my instructions above) is the same for Norton SystemWorks 2006 but the file name. This time the file name is NSWSTE.dll. Restart in safe mode, find the file name into your install path, rename (or delete) and copy the new NSWSTE.dll from install CD to your install path (You can find the file in CDROM:\NSW\NSWSTE.dll), set the attribute to hidden and read only. Do the same process as I mentioned for NIS 2006 before, (restart normally, enter the serial no again, do the 000...000999 etc. etc..)
This is the method I used and if you follow the steps EXACTLY it should work for you, don't post questions about it not working if you didn't follow it from the beginning to end including how to remove Norton from your system

Building on the Kookoo method;
There is no need to remove NIS and NSW first.
Go straight to Step 5
No need to use safe-mode for modifying the NSWTE.dll file for NSW but must use safe mode for ISSTE.dll file in NIS
I have now carried out this process on 4 pcs and a Dell laptop running XP Pro

# re: Norton Internet Security 2006 5/9/2006 2:21 AM Vijay
Hey is that method of kukoo working???? really?
Then I think people who have their NIS working can just go to safe mode and name that isste.dll file as hidden and read only.

Also I opened that virus site that said as keygen... How can I clean that virus? Pls help...

# re: Norton Internet Security 2006 5/10/2006 9:17 AM Ben
I have installed and uninstalled and re-installed NIS 2006 several times and it keeps coming up with a subscription period of 270 days not 365. I removed the product at least twice using Control Panel Remove Programs. I then search the drive with Windows Explorer and found a Symantec folder with a text license file -- removed it. Rebooted and re-install the product. It never ask for the Product key code. The installation process begins with the license, then it scans the computer for virus and then goes into the installation process. Upon completion, a windows appears with the subscription status (270 days). Also, a separte message states that the Product Key Code could not be saved during the registration process.

Any suggestions appreciated.
Ben

Choose a program with a future!

If it isn't possible to crack Norton, so this program will die by unpopularity.
Why to choose a software which is dedicated to die cause of a vice of uncrackability?

# re: Norton Internet Security 2006 5/11/2006 10:08 AM kingfisher
Kookoo's method works only temporarily. When you try to update NIS again, it fails. The update will Norton will disable NIS again.

It works fine if you follow everystep outlined, I haven't had any problems with live update since doing it and its been about a month

# re: Norton Internet Security 2006 5/12/2006 10:59 AM holyshit
kookoo is right but his instructions are a little hard to follow - there are other instructions out there that describe this method in a very basic and easy to follow way. its called the .dll cheat and will work every time but............you must make sure that norton has updated the isste.dll file (through live update) before you before you replace it with the original one. otherwise the program will keep asking you to reactivate. you can tell the difference between the two isste.dll files by their size also the original file will end in .81 and the update file will end in .95

this is a floor in the program which is very hard to rewrite and cost too much money but the next norton will be written different - i promise you

use it for now but not for long.....

cheers
symantec senior programer

# re: Norton Internet Security 2006 5/12/2006 7:25 PM Wowzer
Question: Do you really need the "Read Only" and/or the "Hidden" attribute for the replaced "isste.dll" file? I can understand the "Read Only" one, but why the "Hidden"?

i have NSW2006 installed a month ago... after live-updating a few times... i get da invalid activation code problem... i dunno wat i went in2 exactly.. but rite now.. i dont have this problem anymore.. the only thing now is dat it says da subscriptions are expired... but i've got a solution 4 that too...

used a lil bit of kookoo's trick... for NIS2006 ..'coz my method for NSW2006 didnt work on NIS2006... now my subscriptions for NIS2006 is 2478days... kinda weird..

..i wish 2 help ppl having da problems wit NSW2006 & NIS2006 ..dat i had earlier...

..but then.. things will become very easy for symantec software engineers 2 sort out... i know they may find da bug/loop hole some day... but i dont wanna make dat day as 2day...

Even though you've un-installed NIS from your computer, it leaves a hidden file called "myprofile.userprofile". You must delete this and then re-install NIS for you to get a new subscription. Perform a search with the option to search hidden files.

Does anyone know how to make the NIS 2006 main window come up without freezing? I don't want to reinstall it because it came preinstalled on my machine.

I have a problem with the initial activation options. First I disable all internet connections. Second I click to activate. It automatically tries to connect to the internet. It searches for a min or two and attempts to open up over 100 internet explorer pages. I end up having to run the task manager and closing NIS. Does anyone know why this is happening? Any ideas? Thank you in advance.

# re: Norton Internet Security 2006 5/30/2006 12:53 AM Mike Jones

# re: Norton Internet Security 2006 5/31/2006 11:45 AM Tom
I just bought the NIS 2006 license for 2 computers. The installation on the first of them was OK. On the second computer (windows XP, all updates and SP installed) I have a problem with activation. After connection to the Symantec server I receive the information that the key is accepted and software activated, but the subscription is active for..... -1 (minus one) day. So the main NIS panel displays the message thet the test period finished and I have to activate the software.
I have called the Symantec support two times already. They send me a short instruction but it doesn't work.
I have removed NIS and installed again few times already, also I cleaned the registry, use SymNRT tool etc. Without success....

# re: Norton Internet Security 2006 6/1/2006 6:00 AM GB
I have been a Norton user for years. However NIS2006 is junk. After months of attempting to activate my upgrade (it just hangs when trying to activate), and with absolutely no meaningful assistance from Synmantec I requested a refund. No refunds adfter 60 days they say even thought I have spent months trying to resolve the problem despite their lack of support. Oh well I have now loaded AVG which is fantastic and we will be changing all of our computers to AVG as the Norton subscriptions expire. I will never purchase a Symantec product again!

after 4 years of continuous use of NAV, NIS and NSW (really!), following all the hassle and the partial updates issues and the LU1812 problems of Symantec, AT LAST !!!! AT LAST!!!! I took the plunge and uninstalled everything, and went for NOD32, Outpost firewall Pro and some other utils. Much cheaper, the system runs MUCH FASTER! and more security indeed after you can see by yourself after the first few scans if you ditch Norton. I am a happy user! I DITCHED NORTON FOREVER!!!!!! Bye bye Symantec....... :-)

I've had NIS and it was fine until I was forced to update because Symantec doesn't support older versions (as if they support NIS 2006). System is slower than hell and Symantec is worthless to help. # re: Norton Internet Security 2006 10/22/2006 12:07 PM volpoid
Mike - NIS & NSW are 2 totally different products as the name suggests. NIS - Nortin Internet Security. NSW - Norton System Works. One for protecting your pc the other for performing system cleanup & generally keeping your pc healthy. They can & do run side by side.

I was a die hard Norton fan too, finally converted!
Try using Avast for anti-virus, Diskeeper for de-frag, along with any good regedit tools and you will all save yourself some activation headaches as well as removing some of the bloat for a happier PC as well.

TuneUp Utilities 2007, Has everything one could ask for a smooth running PC, BUT, Unfortunately, it does not have a defragger...
However, theres always Diskeeper(Fast & Efficient).
Move over Norton, I don't miss you!

Talking about cracking and using it for free, I'm actually stuck with Norton SystemWorks 2005 and Norton Internet Security 2005 which also works better and faster than NIS2006 because according to NIS2005's user license agreement, you can use it for 12 months(1 year) for free after you activate your product and the subscription will expire after 12 months. So, if you crack it by using PHONE CHALLENGE CRACK and KEY GENERATOR, this will help a lot. After, it expires i would uninstall it and use a different cracked security software products (almost like extending the deadline) and REFORMAT THE HARD DISK. For me, formatting the hard disk once per year is not a big problem. Also, keep in mind, expired cd key whether it is legitimate or from keygen, will never work until you spend your money for renewing subscription but my tricks really avoid me spending money. And... if you planned to backup your hard disk after fresh install of Windows, make sure that Norton Products is not install/activate and avoid expired cd key. use keygen crack and phone challenge crack! ENJOY USING IT FOR FREE!!! AND BEST REGARD!!! heeheehee!

Further Notice: Format hard disk only when everything had expired.... It took me only 30 mins to re-install. The key generator crack will give you a different cd key for next time use (next subscription after formatting hd). Also, for the moment, i could not find any crack for NIS2006, the phone challenge crack will not work with 2006 but it worked with Norton Internet Security 2005 + Norton Systemworks 2005. The NIS2006 will only work for 6 months before it expire (half of NIS2005's subscription). These free subscriptions were actually free trial during first use but it could prevent you from spending money. Mcafee and others do not have these free trial subscriptions so it would be impossible to use it for free even if it is crack. Bye again and Good Luck to everyone!
