Debugging Windows
After installing VS 2008 on a new PC I noticed that the Autos and Locals windows did not show up when debugging. So I went to the logical place to find them View/Other Windows. No luck they were not there. I use VS every day but like a lot of folks I only need to install it every few years, usually with a new PC. So I forgot where they were. Finding them is easy, just start debugging a project and go to Debug/Windows. The Autos and Locals windows along with the others will be there. And I will probably ......

Another app/add-on list
I had wanted to post something this month so I thought I would post a list of applications or add-ons that I have found to be useful. So to get right to it I’ll will start with the add-ons to Firefox I like. For reference I am currently running Firefox version 3.5.6. Adblock Plus – Does what it says and works pretty well. NoScript – It works well but it may block a site’s functionality until you allow that site. Not a big deal for me or you but it may not be the right extension for everyone (I’m ......

Vista Won’t Turn Off Monitor
This is a completely non-dev related post, but something that had been really getting under my skin for about a month now. I have one Vista PC and it always turned of the monitor like it should. Then it just stopped working. I looked around a bit off and on, since it wasn’t a huge deal I didn’t look that hard. But I had some time the other day and found a super easy fix. I have the power configuration set to run the screen saver after 10 minutes and then turn off the monitor after 20 minutes. The ......

Great Blogging Tool
I know I am not the first to mention Windows Live Writer as a great blogging tool. I’ll mention it anyway, maybe someone will see this post who missed the various positive mentions from other posters (and not just the GWB folks). The install was painless aside from unchecking about seven other MS/MSN junk I did not need. I have used it for a little while now and have had no issues publishing or updating posts. The two main items I like about Live Writer are saving a post before publishing it (i.e. ......

Screen Will Not Rotate 90 Degrees
If you like to rotate your monitor 90 degrees to get more code on the screen but it just will not stick this may be the issue, SP3 for XP. The issue I had was with a Dell monitor, on a Dell Optiplex with an ATI video card. I had downloaded the latest ATI driver (the whole Catalyst setup) from Dell’s site. It installed fine and I could access the settings in the Catalyst Control Center to rotate the screen, but the rotation would never stick. Ended up I needed version 8.4 or higher. So I downloaded ......

XP Extension or Extinction?
I might as well put in my two cents on saving Windows XP from extinction. I’ve tinkered around with Vista a little bit and the interface is pretty cool as long as you have the hardware to run it. Overall it looks good and does have more, albeit annoying, security features. Minor gripes would include changing items in the control panel that have been the same for years. My major gripe would be directly related to work and I’m sure other developers have already voiced this as well. The gripe would ......

Hello everyone!

This is my first post on my blog here so this is more a test than anything. I hope to blog about various items regarding SQL Server, VB.Net, ASP.Net and Ajax/JavaScript. Other technical blogging interests will most likely revolve around Windows, Linux, PC hardware and the XBox 360. Outside of the geeky realm I'll mostly write about soccer (or football if you prefer). Yeah I'm a Yank but I still love the beautiful game!
