You must prepare your Windows Active Directory before you install your first Exchange 2010 Server in your organization.  It is highly recommended that you prepare and test these changes in your lab environment before you touch your production environment.

When we prepared our Windows Active Directory production environment, we encountered the following error messages in the ExchangeSetup.log file when we ran the /prepareAD option.  Here are a few snippets from the ExchangeSetup.log file for your review.

The reason why the Exchange setup to prepare Active Directory failed is because a legacy entry for GFI FAXmaker exists in the disabledGatewayProxy attribute in the E-mail Address Policy object properties.

To fix the problem, follow the steps listed in KB Article 948211.  After you make the change, please allow for enough time for Active Directory replication to complete depending on the size of your environment before you run /prepareAD again.

Just went through this exact issue and followed everything exactly. Still had the same issue. Filter much frustration I broke down and called Microsoft. Here is something they left out and bit me in the @$$. I should them the KB 948211 doc and said they might want to update it. So I hope this might help someone having the same issue.

1st. Follow everything here and in the KB 948211.

2nd. Like pointed out above if you have more that one AD server make sure they are fully replicated after your changes.

3rd. open active directory computers and users, and do a search for FAXMAKER. "If" any users show up remove any email references in the user account properties under email address.

4th. What Microsoft left out of the KB Article 948211 and burned me after 3 days of trouble shooting. After checking and removing faxmaker from disabledGatewayProxy using ASDIEDIT scroll down and also check GatewayProxy. If you see a referance to FAXMAKER in there delete it as well.

Thank you Cory for posting your solution!
I was about to call MS on this also after KB 948211 did not fix the issue. Saved me a ton of time!

Great, you made my day :-)
Microsoft KB isn't working at all when installing Exchange 2010
Just go ahead and delete all entries pointing to your Fax connector

BR many thanks Christopher

Ive run across the same error with faxmaker. KB 948211 doesnt seem to apply to me as I dont have any entries for faxmaker there.

If I remove the faxmaker connector, wont that render it inoperable?
