The Enable fast message retrieval checkbox for an IMAP4 Virtual Server on an Exchange 2003 Front-end Server is grayed out as shown below.

IMAP4-1

It is grayed out, by default, because the setting does not apply to an Exchange 2003 Front-end Server.  For more information about enabling fast message retrieval, please click here.

When you run the Microsoft Exchange Best Practices Analyzer tool, a warning message appears stating that the fast message retrieval option is not enabled for an Exchange 2003 Front-end Server as shown below.

IMAP4-2

To prevent the Microsoft Exchange Best Practices Analyzer tool from flagging this as an issue for an Exchange 2003 Front-end Server, you will need to modify an Active Directory attribute for the IMAP4 Virtual Server using Active Directory Service Interfaces Editor (ADSI Edit).

Using the MMC ADSI Edit snap-in, connect to the Configuration container.  Click on the following containers (CN) until you reach the IMAP4 Virtual Server instance.  Click Configuration | Services | Microsoft Exchange | your Exchange Organization name | Administrative Groups | your Administrative Group name | Servers | your Exchange Server name | Protocols | IMAP4 | 1

Right-click CN=1 and click Properties and search for the returnExactMsgSize attribute.  The Value for the attribute will be set to TRUE.

Attribute

Double-click returnExactMsgSize and change the Value for the attribute to FALSE and click OK.

After you make the change, the Enable fast message retrieval checkbox for an IMAP4 Virtual Server on an Exchange 2003 Front-end Server will be checked and grayed out as shown below.

IMAP4-3

The next time you run the Microsoft ExBPA tool, it will not flag this as an issue.
