Keeping track of the changes in the database

I was wondering that how do you keep track of the changes you make in the database of the application. These changes can be adding a new SPROC, adding a new field in the table, modifying a SPROC and modifying the field in the database table.

If you're using SQL Server 2005, you can create DDL triggers...

If you're asking for a best-practice for formalizing the process of databases, you should practice Continuous Integration against your database (just like your code). A really good pointer for this practice is on CodeProject here:

We use a tool called RedGate SQLCompare. Having written them by hand, I really like the ability to script them, though they don't always work 100%, its better than by hand. 5/15/2006 11:31 AM | Josh

You can script the db using redgate and do a few things - store the scrip then compare them - or script every table and sproc/view quickly using sql 2000 (note I dont think you can do this for a large db quickly in sql 2005 - I'm not a fan of the new scripting options in sql 2005)

Store the individual items in sourcesafe (otherwise known as sourcesatan by me) and check them in when you do a release (not every time you make a change.
