Quick Guide to setup a MVC project for Unit Testing
A barrier to getting into writing executable tests (Unit Tests, integration tests, automated UI tests, etc) with some people I work with, is not knowing how to get started. I believe the desire and the recognition of the value and importance of this testing is growing, but I want to help people get over that hump. Read the MSDN Unit Testing MVC article. consider splitting controllers into a different project as suggested Don’t put your data access code inside the Controller methods, use a data layer/object. ......

CSharpRocks just pointed out Kudu to me on my Stackoverflow question. I was able to unzip a file through the mywebsite.scm.azurewebsites... address. Here’s an introduction video about Kudu on Azure Friday. Here’s an article on MSDN ......

How to find the Azure Management Certificate
I looked for a long time and finally found it. I couldn’t find a link in my account Login into the Azure portal. go to https://manage.windowsazure... in the same web browser. This will download a publishSettings file. The management certificate string is in there. Remember to keep this private. All you need is the Management certificate and your subscription id (Portal –> settings, or in this same publish settings file) and you can do a lot with the Azure ......

Checking the Status of a Cloud Service with Azure Management API
We are automatically deploying a package to Azure, then running tests against that instance. See Brady Gaster’s article for more details. I needed a way to make sure the deployment was complete, and if not wait for it. After digging through the objects with Intellisense, we found this solution:public bool IsCloudServiceRunning() { var details = _computeManagementClient.Ho... var deployment = details.Deployments.First(d => d.Name == _parameters.CloudServiceName ......

Restructuring my work day to be more productive
I was recently at HDC 2014 (#HDC14 on Twitter) and a keynote by Jack Skeels from Agency Agile “Mastering Agile and write more code” was a great presentation on why Agile doesn’t always work and how we need to adapt it to our specific organizations. Why aren’t we more productive? One main take away for me was the idea of Flow (see the graph below, which I optimized for a smaller kb size, thanks to Mr. Morrell from AgencyAgile for the emailed permission to include it). If you’ve ever suddenly realized ......

HDC 2014 – Technical Debt is Good*
I was able to go to the Heartland Developers Conference again this year. As always there was a lot of great speakers and it was a lot of fun. I’m going to do a few posts with notes I took from the presentations. Steve P. Green gave a great talk “Technical Debt is Good*”. I’ve written about Technical Debt before, but Steve explained it in a new light. He explained Technical Debt very well and then talked about how it can be used as a communication and development tool, as long as you identify and ......

Problem Steps Recorder in Windows
I just found out a new to me tool, that’s been around for a long time, that could be very useful. It’s called Problem Steps Recorder. Go to the start menu and type in “psr” and hit enter. This pulls up a helpful tool that will take screen shots and let you enter comments to send for a bug report. I’ve found it in Windows 7, but it looks like it is in Windows 8 as well ......
